Hi everyone. I'm trying to find a good plastic surgeon and have been doing resarch online. I know this is supposed to be about costs, and that's a big question of mine, but I know that everyone tells you to find that out during a consultation. So I think it is that time. What I'm wondering is if there are suggestions out there of great questions to ask doctors. How do you really get honest help from them? What does everyone look for in a plastic surgeon. I know we all have our priorities and concerns, but I want to make sure I'm thinking of everything. I thought it would help to see what everyone else's are. Thank you so much in advance!

Hey Kulashaker...ever thought about doing just a little bit of research before posting a question? It looks like the site that is linked to on the top of the page has pretty good questions.

look at this page:
http://www.plasticsurgeryportal.com/ask.htm

then maybe do a google search or list out what's important to you.

then and only then ask the good people here to take time out of their busy schedules to give their advice.

Wow plasticprincess! Hmm, well thank you for your honesty. You're definitely right, and I actually have done research on this subject. I guess I didn't express that well enough. It's just that I'm at a point where I'd really like real people's thoughts. WHen it comes down to making the choice, how can you really know if a website has covered everything. Maybe it's silly. Just thought I'd throw the inquiry out there. But, hey, thank you for my only response so far!

I lipo last spring and the one thing I appreciated most was being able to communicate with my doc via email if I had questions. He's busy, I'm busy....I didn't have time to keep calling his office and waiting for a return call. He responded usually within 24 hours.

Oh, that does seem like it would be helpful. I've already attended one consultation, maybe I can ask in future ones how available the doctor is for follow up questions or important matters. Great point, thank you.

Hi kulashaker,
I got that you did your research, I believe in the 1st sentence. Maybe some people don't read to well, I mean she is PP ya never know maybe the face lift affected her eyes. Too stretched out and can't see to well.
Sorry, normally I say, if you don't have anything good to say or provide any good advice then don't f#*k'n say anything.
PP why even respond if it took so much precious time out of your day? Don't bother responding.
kulashaker, I apologize I really don't have any experience in the matter but is sounds like you are going in the right direction. Continue asking, even if you get some neg. responses there are good people out there.

hey, just keep on asking as much and as often as you can, because there are many good folks who are happy to help you.
i,m not sure plasticprincess should really be here as she sounds rather like her name. plastic. :( shallow springs to mind as well.
i suggest you see a number of surgeons.
ask how long and what type of precedures he,s done.
ask about recovery times.
time needed off work.

there are many forums with great people who are always willing to listen and advise.
good luck.

It took me a few years, a handfull of surgeons and meeting people who have ' it' done to decide, and finally my big ( huge !) operation day is scheduled. I call it 'huge' because I'm having three procedures done in one go. I'm not nervous or scared because I know everything will be fine. So keep on researching and asking, you'll feel more confident and you'll learn so much! This is what I used to ask the doctors : What is your speciality? ( surgeons cannot be good at every procedure ). What is your revision rate? What types of revisions have you done?( 6% of revision means 'excellent' ). Will revision attract any adidtional costs ? ( revisions are usually free of charge but you'll pay some hospital expenses). What specific types of complications have you had in your practice in.... ? ( whatever you are after) . What general / specific risks or usual/ unusual complications possible and how to prevent them. ( NO Alcohol, Aspirin, Vit E and some herbal based medications should be taken 14 days prior the surgery to prevent heavy bleeding). Ask for before and after photos, and revision photos ( if there is any .) What % of your patients are satisfied with your work? Can it be arrange for me to meet one or two patients? Do you schedule more than one operation per day? ( you don't need a doctor, rushing from one operating room to another). Ask for Patience Instructions Sheets both before and after surgery. Look at the doctor's personality, you need to feel comfortable with him/her and to make sure that he/she understands what you want and whether it is possible to obtain; don't trust doctors who are rushing, talk too much, promising miracles or offering ' special treats' such as dodgy price reductions or price negotiations, extra procedures for free or advices to do more procedures than needed. Have a computer image done and discuss the procedure and the outcomes in details ( open /close surgery, nose bones correction, fat removing or re-distribution and etc.) Don't take chances, if you are concerned about something you consider significant , clarify it. Good luck!
